Dewsbury To Brighouse. 9 locks.

The events of the past few days have completely restored our faith in human nature and have made us feel good.

We are heading towards Brighouse now for a bit of a restock, can't have Ubique becoming a "Dry Ship" oh no no no no.

What a setting for a lock this is, (I'm thinking jigsaw puzzle). This was the first lock as we left Dewsbury.

Canal picture....................Bit too much sun here but never mind.

Here's D's perch high above the water where she has to stand to wind the paddles on these type of gates. The longer you look at them the less they seem to be fixed in place.

Here she is standing on one and giving it some welly with the stick (Lock Spike). No room to slip on there and falling in near a lock is just not an option. Lots of care required.

Lots and lots of rusting railway bridges along here, this one has been built next to an old brick and stone bridge, you can make it out in the background.

Nothing seems to be moving on most of them......... but the navigation is still here watching things come and go.

An unusual find on the navigation, a proper sea going high speed military launch. Those RAF roundels before the number are confusing though. Did the RAF have rescue boats? I'm sure someone will put me right.

Reading the Nicholson before each days cruising can lead you to believe that you can be swept onto weirs in the blink of an eye should you miss the lock turn. Thankfully these huge orange floats connected with steel bars give a vague hint as to the location of such weirs.

The Calder & Hebble twists and turns from River to Navigation via locks in what seems to be about every twenty minutes, this gives you a very varied and really pleasant cruise, not to mention nice and shady.

We are now at Brighouse and the rain is coming down as hard as you might expect after a few days of sun.
Still, an oil change and more is on the cards so we might as well stay here for a while.

Until next time..........................
