Brighouse to Huddersfield. 12 Locks & Onto The Huddersfield Canal.

We are now on plan "C".

We are trying to get back across the Pennines by way of the Huddersfield now. This canal has the longest tunnel on the network and passage has to be booked in advance, Friday at 09:00 is our slot.

As we approached the entrance to the Huddersfield the canal turned into this thick green soup. It was so thick it felt like pushing through glue.

It didn't get any better as we tried to leave the first lock. I did think at one stage that perhaps this part is not open as there was no evidence of any recent boat movement.
Pressing on though (as there was no going back) I was clearing the prop of rubbish about every ten minutes, at this point we did think that we were not going to make our "Slot" at the tunnel even though it was at the end of the week.

It took us just over two hours to work through three locks, then thankfully the canal cleared quite a lot and we were off again.

Approaching Aspley Basin was this really unusual lift bridge. All chains and guide wheels, it is push button operated though so very easy to work.

They put the button console next to the old manual winch, the winch is the first thing D saw and thought you must be joking. It seems to have been around for a long time if that date is anything to go by (The bridge that is, not D).

We have stayed here today and had a walk around Huddersfield, which I must say was a bit of a shock. So many shops and brand new shopping centres, there is no sign of a recession around this part.

On our travels again tomorrow...............................

Cor! That looks worse than soup. Did BW warn you about it when you booked Standedge?
I assume they are aware of it? Do you know if they expect to be trying to clear the weed?

Hi John.

No they didn't warn us about it and they are aware.

They have no plans to clear it as far as we can make out.

Also we are stuck at the collection point for the tunnel as they didn't tell us there was a stoppage here when we arrived yesterday. if they had we wouldn't have moved through past all the good moorings.

Such is BW I suppose.

Regards Chris & Debbie.
